A police officer attached to the Special Anti-Rpbbery Squad (SARS), of the Lagos State Police Command, Corporal Sunday David, has been reportedly killed by a mob in
Agege area of the state after he tried to save the life of an Internet
fraudster popularly called 'yahoo-Yahoo Boy', reports The Nation.
According
to the report, David, also known as Iku Sunday, who was said to be a
close friend of the scammer, had allegedly shot and killed two people
while trying to rescue his friend and as he tried to escape with the
man, the angry crowd chased after them in his new Toyota Camry car and
they were caught in a traffic snarl along Salawu Street, Orile-Agege,
and was shot in the head while his friend was also shot dead.
An
eyewitness narrated that the incident which happened in the afternoon
of Sunday, January 10, occurred when some boys playing football in the
area, saw the Yahoo Boy driving by and they went to him to demand that
he gave them some money.
He reportedly gave his
aide his ATM Card to go to a nearby bank and withdraw the sum of
N200,000 for the boys but the man only came back with N60,000 and while
the boys protested that the money would not go round, the Yahoo Boy
called his friend, David, who lived close by and when the late officer
went to the scene, he allegedly shot at some of the boys, killing two of
them on the spot.
As he tried to escape with his
friend, the angry mob chased them to the spot where they were also
killed in retaliation. A search on him by the police revealed his
service pistol as well as a loaded AK 47 rifle in his car.
A
senior police officer, who spoke with newsmen, said that the late David
is however, in big trouble as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP),
Solomon Arase, had directed that policemen should never take guns home.
“It
is a serious issue. He has been posted to Ikorodu for over one week now
but he has not reported there. We are yet to know how he had two guns
in his possession and what he was doing with them.
Just
the fact that he had those guns means dismissal. Because the IGP has
been warning since last year that no policeman should take weapons home
after duty.
We cannot say it was armed
robbery since his attackers did not take anything from him. He had two
guns, a gold chain, and money but none was touched.
They
just killed him and ensured he was dead. I do not know the condition of
the people he shot but I heard one died in the hospital.”
